In the earlier days of the Silicon Valley the electronic gaming industry was flourishing, but still in its infancy and had significant problems manufacturing and distributing its products. The Founders of Extron recognized a need for a better manufacturing and logistics company to support this fledgling industry’s unique requirements. In this environment in 1983 Extron was born. From its original 40,000 square foot facility in San Jose, Extron offered Printed Circuit Card assembly, product rework, game cartridge assembly and final pack out to developers and consumers of electronic games. As technology developed Extron expanded its capabilities.
Extron’s services were so much in demand that they had to expand, first to a 100,000 sq ft facility in 1992 and then to a 160,000 sq ft plant in only two years later. Gaming industry continued to expand and so did Extron, adding RMA processing to its services in 1994. By 2004 Extron had expanded into a facility with 240,000 sq ft of electronic assembly and final configuration floor space.
As Electronics manufacturing expanded it reliance on import based manufacturing the Founders recognized that the experience they had gained working with the Electronic Gaming industry had application far beyond that industry. Extron's service offering became even more valuable to other industries doing their manufacturing in Asia, but requiring in-market customization, distribution and other services that are not appropriate to outsource to Asia. Furthermore, the trend towards outsourcing has provided added impetus to Extron's growth.
Today, Extron offers full service Virtual Operations and broad Supply Chain Solutions to its customers from its 300,000 sq ft facility in Fremont, CA.
